What is PASHMINA?    According to the Oxford English Dictionary, pashm, from the Persian word for "wool," refers to the underfur of certain Tibetan animals, particularly goats, commonly used for the making of shawls.  Pashmina, as we've seen it on the Internet and in fashion magazines and mail-order catalogs, is a textile blend of silk and cashmere.  Oddly enough, it's a word which doesn't appear in the usual online dictionaries, or even in our Webster's.

And yet, if you search for "pashmina"  on Yahoo!, you'll find a host of sites offering pashmina shawls and scarves --in fact, pashmina seems to be this year's trendiest fashion fabric. The proof is on the newstand, and on the street and in the stores of USA, UK, Germany, Switzerland, France, Denmark, Sweden etc. In the pages of Vogue, Bazaar, Marie Claire and In-Style these vibrant seasonless shawls appear over and over again. The pashmina we see on the Web  and in local stores is usually a 80/20, 70/30 or even a 50/50 blend of cashmere and silk respectively. This  blend produces a strong yet supple, lightweight, luxurious wrap for evening or day-time wear. This luxurious fabric, culled from the neck of the himalayan goat has been prized for centuries for its superior softness, durability and luster, warmth as well as its rarity and a  heavinly feel.

Pashmina is the softest and the most luxurious cashmere wool  (cashmere: is defined as any wool under 19 microns thick).  It is well known as cashmere even though the animal it comes from is Capra Hircus (locally called "Chyangra"), the same goat cashmere comes from, except this one is found at heights of 12,000 to 14,000 feet or more, a desolate place with little vegetation and extremely cold conditions of the Himalayan Region of Kashmir, Nepal and Tibet. These goats are naturally blessed with a very thin, short inner-coat of hair which is the best natural insulator. This inner coat of hair is pashmina which has a diameter of 10-15 microns (human hair is 75 microns thick) and varies from 50 - 200 grams per goat per year .

The source of our raw material is Tibet-Nepal (for Pashmina) and China ( for Silk). When the goat (Chyangra) sheds its coat, this luxurious pashmina wool is gathered, kneaded and hand loomed with silk which adds durability and sheen to the fabric. We have a well developed process control strategy right from the procurement of raw-materials to the final packaging stage. Our products are hand woven by highly experienced weavers.
