Amy Rose is a huge fan of Sonic. She stays in Knothole with the Freedom Fighters, and usually wants to go with them on their missions. They don't let her because she's too young, but in Sonic Adventure, Amy Rose uses the Ring of Acorns to become older, and she asks the Freedom Fighters to go on a mission with them now that she is older. Sonic is against it, but Nate Morgan convinces him to let her go so that he can keep her under observation.
History:
In either Knuckles #11 or #12, it becomes clear that Amy Rose was originally from the kingdom of Mercia. Rob 'o the Hedge sent her to Knothole to keep her safe. Rob is a relative of hers, but I don't remember just how, since I don't have those issues of Knuckles anymore. Amy Rose is a kind of background character, but she appears more and more often, probably because of her role in Sonic Adventure.
