Bitter Harvest
Stephen stars as Travis Graham. A quiet demure, inexperienced and painfully shy young man. He has had a disturbed childhood and his father has recently died, leaving him the farm and an expensive coin collection. Travis leads a very sheltered life and is most likely a virgin. His wishes to travel but, for the time being, decides to work alone on the farm. One day a beautiful young woman, Kelly (Jennifer Rubin), arrives at Travis' place with a vague excuse about looking for friends and she ends up staying with Travis. She soon seduces him. Not long after, another woman Jolene (Patsy Kensit) comes into his life. She wants to buy his property and he is attracted to her because she is beautiful, British and has traveled a lot. She also seduces him. He is a pretty submissive guy. When the two girls meet at his house Travis panics but he need not have done because they are soon having threesomes and Jolene moves in with them. The two women gradually corrupt him both morally and sexually. When Kelly murders a man who breaks in the house and tries to rape her, Travis agrees to cover it up rather than call his policeman friend (played by Adam Baldwin). It turns out that the murdered man was a bank robber who has left some plans for his next job in his car. The women coax Travis into helping them rob the bank and he becomes addicted to the adrenaline rush. Travis' behavior gets more and more unpredictable and violent much to the annoyance of Kelly and Jolene.
What's a man to do when he has a big empty house? 1) find some house guests 2) sell it. Well our young gentleman does a bit of both! The two women that make up most of the film take this poor country boy for the ride of his life, but the question is, Who wins? There's quite a bit of time spent on the Deputy, played by Adam Baldwin, as he struggles to deal with being in his father's shadow. Adam and Travis seem to have had a close relationship as children and Travis likes to lord it over Travis. It seems as thought there should be more to this conflict.. but I couldn't see it. There's also a few hints to Travis having a very disturbing childhood, that probably caused his mild mannered behavior and then his 'change' to the wilder side. Stephen looks fantastic and does a great job in the film, but I'm not wild about all the elements surrounding him.
The video cover says that this movie is "in the tradition of Basic Instinct and Thelma and Louise". I guess there are similar elements in Bitter Harvest (like lots of skin and law breaking) but it isn't nearly as good as either of those films. This is strictly B grade smut. Stephen fans won't care however because it's a good chance to check him out. There are quite a lot of sex scenes in Bitter Harvest (some of them three way). I don’t want to give the ending away as it may (or may not) come as a surprise. The film isn't fantastic but it's quite interesting to watch. There is some dodgy acting, bad direction, and a questionable script but Stephen, as usual, does his best. The film really shows his range. His character at the start of the film is so different from the one at the end of the film. It is quite sexy how he just lies there and allows himself to be 'corrupted'. If you are going to rent this movie for intellectual stimulation, forget it. If you merely want some eye candy and a mildly thrilling plot, you won't be disappointed.
