Cheers and Chants Added October 2001

How many times have you gone to a game and the cheerleaders had long boring pauses between cheers; repeated the same cheers too often or worse echoed the other team’s cheers and chants, or cheered at inappropriate times. I have spent the last several years going to high school games and since I do not like most sports, I usually concentrate on observing the cheerleaders. I have video taped all sort of teams and have spent time evaluating the various techniques and cheer styles. I have listed here some of my thoughts on what make a GREAT cheerleading teams. I hope this will be helpful to those cheerleaders who wish to improve their teams.

Chants are usually repeated in sets of 3 or 5.

SCHOOL / MASCOT NAME

Use your school’s name or the mascot name interchangeably depending on how it sounds when you do the cheers. You want your chants to be clear and loud easily identifiable. Nothing is worse than a cheer you can not identify who the cheer squad is chanting for.

Cheers should be chanted loudly. Your team should be heard at easily up in the stands. Sound checks could be done during practice so everyone will have an idea of how far their voices travel.

The cheers are very basic but what makes a good cheer team is the precision, accuracy and spirit the chants are executed with. Straight lines, no talking, sharp presentation, precise motions.

Champion teams have quality and quantity . It does not matter how many stunts you do. It does not matter how fancy, complex or intricate the motions and stunts are if they are executed sloppily.
