There is a legend of sorts from the city of Waterloo, Iowa.
On the northern side of the city, there is a short street called Stone Quarry Road. It is marked with city-issued street signs, which are green. Now in Waterloo, streets that are public roadways are marked with green street signs, and private streets are marked with blue ones.
What is odd about this is that the entrances (on both ends) are fenced off with chain-link fencing, and there are several "No Trespassing" signs on the fences.
It is rumored that on certain nights (on the night of the Full Moon whenever it occurs on the 19th of the month), a fog develops in the fenced-in area, and a mysterious light can be seen through the fog.
I have heard several stories that one night, back in 1956, a group of six teenagers (aged 15-17) decided to see what the light was coming from. A few of them scaled the fence and began walking toward the light, while two or three of them stood guard in case of police interference.
They trekked through the fog, and discovered that the light was coming from a house deep in the woods. Even stranger, no source for the light was visible. They decided to enter the house, and found that the doors were unlocked. Walking into the house, each room was brilliantly lit, and again, no source for the light was anywhere to be seen. Adorning the walls were paintings, but no photographs. They were not able to find any electrical outlets or light switches, either.
They heard voices coming from outside the house, and decided to bail out the nearest window. As the last boy tried to jump, he was grabbed by the ankle. One of the men in the house (possibly the owner) yelled "Gotcha!" and pulled him back in.
At that point, a cloud began to move over the face of the moon. As the light from the moon disappeared, the fog lifted, and the house vanished, along with their friend!
They vowed to never relate the occurrance to anyone, and their friend was officially declared missing a week later, then dead seven years later.
Then one day, over 22 years since the event, the friends (who stayed in contact) noticed on the calendar that the full moon would be on the 19th that month. Maybe they were feeling a bit nostalgic, perhaps they were just curious, but they decided to visit Stone Quarry Road on the 19th.
When they were getting ready, the following things occurred: two of the friends were feeling ill, one of them couldn't get his car to start, and the other two were asked to work late.
Then, precisely at midnight, everything was OK, and they decided to go anyway. As they approached, they noticed nothing unusual; no fog, no light...nothing. They decided then that they would drive into Cedar Falls to a restaurant to grab something to eat, when they noticed someone on the side of the road, flagging them down. They pulled over to find a 15-year-old boy, who told them that his friends had left him when the owners of the house got home, and he was caught by one of the owners.
He went on to tell them that he was asked a bunch of questions, and the people told him that the year was 1887! They all laughed it off, and they let him go.
Then the friends broke their news to the boy that the year was now 1978, and they were the friends who "abandoned" him in the house. And though the remaining five had each aged twenty-two years, their friend was still only 15 years old!
There are also other stories about similar encounters on Stone Quarry Road, but this is the one that is told most often.
