The rain poured
in buckets from the dark, starless sky above, drenching anything caught
in its wrath instantly. Caught like the homely creature that slunk up the
steps to the brownstone, slipping into the dry interior of the building.
No one noticed, no one payed the least attention. The woman was another
of the faceless masses in the churning caldron of the city.
Up the stairs
Cassie slunk, pushing thick strands of wet auburn hair from her cheeks
and forehead. Another night of working a double shifts to make ends meet,
then home to absorb herself in the world that she and marvel created. Looking
at her watch outside her door, she sighed. One a.m. Just enough
time to finish the next part of her popular fic, Bitter Wind, starring
her favorite X-Men, Wolverine. Inside her small, cramped apartment she
slipped into her pajamas, sitting down at her computer. Looking around
the desk, she reached out fingering the small action figures that lined
the top .. mostly Wolverine, but some Gambit, admitting she had a soft
spot for the Cajun, too.
She began to
type, her fingers working diligently at the keys stopping only briefly
to gather her thoughts and then the clicking would start anew. She smiled
from time to time as something particularly brilliant jumped from her head
onto the screen. As the hands on the clock rolled around to 2:30 she stood
and stretched, glancing over at her dozing cat, and decided a cup of hot
tea would sufficently revive her for another half hour, another half hour
to pour out her perfect mutant world where Wolverine was always the hero,
the one to save the day, the one to vanquish any enemy.
Just as she entered
the kitchen a blinding flash of lightening lit up the sky, filling her
vision, accompanied by a deafening clap of thunder. Turning toward the
doorway she rushed into the other room just at the first flicker of the
lights, hitting save. She reached beside the desk, her hand wrapping
around the plug. Knowing she could just turn the machine off wasn't good
enough. She had to be sure and this night her paranoia cost her.
Her hand was met with an intense jolt gripping her mercilessly, sending
volts through her nervous system until it was short circuited, until there
was nothing inside the gray matter of Cassie Durham's brain, her saphire
blue eyes staring blankly at the ceiling.

"UGH!" came from
beneath a pillow in the solitary room. The only sound returned was
silence. "What the hell?" the soft voice piped, stretching sore limps with
cat like grace. "I know I'm late for work! I just know it!" Cassie sat
up in the bed rubbing her scratchy eyes, gaping as she pulled her hand
away. "Shit, Toto! I don't think we're in Kansas anymore!" she gasped,
eyes taking in the expensive funishings around her, beneath her. The cherrywood
paneling of the walls begged for her touch. Such elegance, such beauty,
she thought. She was quickly jerked from her exploration with a loud pounding
on the door.
"Chere, breakfast
is gettin col'. Don tink you wanna eat col' eggs, non?" was yelled through
the door and Cassie froze.
NO WAY! Can't
be!
"Mon amie? Cassandra?
You in dere?" Then there was a twisting of the doors knob. She panicked,
praying the door was locked. Luck was on her side ... the lock was secured.
"I don't know
what the hell happened, girl, but this IS NOT good!" she whispered to herself,
afraid to move away from the wall. Then she shook herself into some reason.
"Okay. I admit it, this is weird, but it's not what you're thinking. I
can't be, so just get over it." Taking a step towards the door she
nearly fainted, hearing the one voice she couldn't mistake. Even
if it was in a movie, she still knew that voice.
"She awake, Gumbo?"
"WOLVERINE!"
Her gasp seemed to fill the whole room, making her want to crawl back into
the bed and hide until whatever this was passed.
