BIRMINGHAM'S BEST RETAILER FOR METAL AND HARDCORE

VENUES

PROMOTERS AND VENUES Birmingham has a real problem at the moment with larger venues. For huge bands the NEC works out just fine and for small bands the Foundry is great. The Old Railway occasionally gets the real underground touring bands too. Unfortunatley mid-sized alternative bands are forced to skip Birmingham (think Sick Of It All, Pantera, Neurosis, all missing Brum in the last year). I reckon it's: Centre of town stuff: FOUNDRY - Simon from Psychonation every Monday, mainly local bands, £2 usually on the door. Archangel (I can talk to them and sort this out), plus other gigs Stay Sick - Punk.rock'n'roll.soul - Saturdays once a month. OLD RAILWAY - Two different promoters share duties here. To be honest, the Old Railway is the hub of the scene. Badger: FREE IN! Punk/Hardcore/Metal/Indie EVERY Tuesday and Wednesday- In its present format Badger Promotions has been running since January 1997. The Old Railway is the only place to see the best bands in Birmingham play live. Sound is provided by Big Hair Rock soundsystems (That's Rhys from Step Back, people not in the know). The Old Railway is the only place to meet friendly people dangerously obsessed with music. If you haven't been to the Old Railway yet, ignore all rumours, you know what to do. Discordian: Just whatever as long as it's from the heart, every Friday and Sunday, about £3 on the door - See Richard (01384) 832 537 or Email: magick@discordian.co.uk. Web: http://www.discordian.co.uk MOSELEY ARMS - Not punk (it's acoustic nights Thursdays) but it's run by Badger so pop down and talk to Mark. Free Vegetarian food provided 9:00pm-10pm. Doors: FREE IN!!! XLs - Moneygrabbing gits, but have started putting on local bands. Anyone know much about this?##### SANCTUARY - Stu... 07967 750087##### QUE CLUB - MONKEY MICKS - dunno too much about this one. A job for someone?##### Phone: 0121 359 6298 FLAPPER - Just occasional punk stuff I think, Zoot just Indie##### Zoot Promotions Doors 8 to 8:30pm, usually about £3 in. Phone: Jackie Wade: 0121 458 3811 or 0958 340162 Venue: 0121 236 2421 Fax: 0870 055 7785 Web: http://thrill.to/zoot Outskirts of town stuff: FARCE AND FIRKIN (Selly Oak) - Right next to the University down the Bristol Road. Different University bands put on nights here with varying degrees of success due to lack of organisation. More info from me: redflagpromos@onet.co.uk as I know all parties concerned. Try http://home.onet.co.uk/~morganbb/redflagpromos/ too. FINN AND FIRKIN (Selly Park) - Down Pershore Road out of town. Put on occasional gigs but almost exclusively tribute bands. Cheap to book for your own gigs though. Tel: 0121 472 0136 THE BEAR (Bearwood) - DSS guys. Promoter phone: 0121 458 6138 Venue phone: 0121 429 1184##### RIBB PROMOTIONS (Redditch) - RIBB Promotions came together about two years ago. Basically eight 16-18 year-olds who love music and enjoy organising gigs for local bands who they think deserve a chance to play. Gigs are few and far between, but they're hoping to rectify that in the near future. They're also thinking about putting together a CD of Redditch bands, though this is just an idea at present. Website at: http://www.youth-initiatives.org.uk/RIBBhome.html APPLESEED PROMOTIONS (Redditch) - ?##### Places out of Birmingham: CARDBOARD CUTOUT PROMOTIONS - Steve Eaton promotes gigs in the Hand and Heart in Coventry on Saturdays and other days. Phone: 024 76 503554 Email: steve@joanofarc.demon.co.uk . JBs (Dudley) - CIVIC AND WULFRUN HALLS (Wolverhampton) -
