| The next day saw me, Jeff, James and Jersey City's Kevin Dailey on top of the roof of the venerable ASTRAL apartment building on Franklin St. We were walking to Thai Cafe to discuss Kevin’s idea of having an internet radio station to promote all of the local bands we know. Kev remarked on the grandeur of the Astral and James said “have you ever been inside?” and decided we should go on the rooftop. Just that moment a Puerto Rican mother and her two sons were exiting the building, and the older son, around 8 years, held the door open for us. The outside of the Astral is beautiful (as you can see) but the inside looks like a combination of a defunct school building and a prison. All the windows are frosted so you can’t see out of them and the walls are painted two shades of gray. It was easy to picture the sketchy activities that used to occur in the building in the early 90s happening there. |  |
Later that day, back at the apartment, Kevin and i were watching Univision talk-show El Gordo y La Flaca ("The Fat Man and the Skinny Lady"). Remarked Kevin on the show's corpulant host: "It's cool to watch a show where the host could die at any second."
