MY DOG LUCKY
By TOM SMIKOSKI
I was only about seven or eight at the time. A friend of the family had
given us a little puppy. Like most puppies he was playful and never seemed
to run out of energy. He hated his leash and was always trying to slip his
head out of the collar to gain freedom. Freedom is what he wanted. I am
sure that if dogs were capable of prayer, freedom is what he would have
prayed for.
One day while my sister and I were out walking him, he managed to slip his
head out of that collar. He had achieved his goal. He won his freedom.
He got what he wanted.
Lucky took off running as fast as his little paws could carry him. He ran
right out into the street and into the path of an oncoming car. Lucky
wasn't so lucky that day.
He got what he desired, but that wasn't really in his best interest. The
end result was disaster. Had I been a little more careful I might have
prevented Lucky from getting loose. I might have saved his life. He
wouldn't have liked my holding him back, but holding him back would have
been best for him.
God sometimes holds us back. Many times we get mad because He doesn't give
us the desires of our hearts. Doesn't give us what we want. We think He
isn't answering our prayers. But God knows all things. He is a good
Father. Sometimes what we want, is not be in our best interest and
for that reason He withholds it. Sometimes getting what we ask for could
be disastrous.
This is where Faith comes in. We must have faith that God knows what is
best for us. We must have faith that all things will work out for good,
after all, that is what God says, and God doesn't lie.
