we are born innocent
believe me, Adia--
we are still innocent

If you think your vote has no purpose except to get the candidate elected, and is worthless if it fails to do so, think again...

Excerpted from the February 2000 edition of Hightower's Lowdown newsletter:

Refusing to vote doesn't count at all, but using the ballot creatively does get counted and not only registers a protest, but in some well-organized third party races (New Party, Greens, Libertarians, Reform Party) people are already getting elected.

Election 2000 is also going to offer a watershed opportunity for developing a genuine populist politics. ... In addition to raising the kitchen-table issues that the two-party duopoly avoids, a Nader campaign can broaden the message, public image, and base of the Green Party, qualify it for ballot status in almost every state, and reach the 5% threshold of votes next November that will qualify it for millions of dollars in federal party-building funds.

VOTE IN NOVEMBER.  5% ROCKS THE VOTE.

The Always Insightful Erin W.:  Poor BC, you're getting so frustrated with the people who want YOU to do all the work on this publication.  Why should they send in funny stuff, think-y stuff, art stuff, controversial stuff (perhaps one and the same), and bawdy rhyme-y stuff? Though they likely have things of interest hidden away, perhaps of their own creation, they won't send it to you. Will you take their rights to it away? I know you, BC, of course you won't.

Editor: You're right in the sense that I am getting frustrated.  But listen-- that's not just because I want people to do work for me!  My honest vision of this publication, from the beginning, was that people could and would eventually come to use it for their own selfish reasons-- as a forum for their own expression-- not for me or because I asked them too, but because it satisfied a part of them to do so.  The only thing I can do is be patient though, if this is to happen, and subtly coax my readers into letting go of their fear, if that's what's holding them back.  It might not be-- but from my point of view, if I was getting a publication like this and really understood what it was about, I would love to respond to things and send in my own blatherings, I would love to contribute to a lively, intelligent and free-form discussion-- but only after I was fully reassured that it was a safe space to do so.

time is the illusion of space perpetuated by manufacturers.  the manufacturers of illusion are perpetuated by time and space.  space and time is perpetuated by the illusions of the manufacturers.  perpetuated space and time is manufactured by illusion.  perpetuated manufacturers, is time an illusion of space?  manufacturers perpetuated by space and time is an illusion.  space and time is an illusion.  space and time is an illusion.  space and time is an illusion.  illusion.  illusion.
