Colin Healy Fact File

Colin Healy-Current Domestic Club,Sunderland A.F.C.

Since Colin Healy made his debut against Russia in February, 2002, he has been tipped by everyone as the man to lead Ireland for many years to come.

Healy first impressed his neighbours in Cork with his tenacious tackling and incredible work rate, and he was soon off to Celtic. In Glasgow he found an admirer in Martin O'Neill, but with the experienced pair of Lambert and Lennon ahead of him in the pecking order, Healy was always on the fringes of the team.

After making only a handful of appearances during the 2001/02 season, Healy jumped at the chance to join Coventry City on loan and while there Mick McCarthy spotted him and immediately called him into the squad for his debut against Russia. He was named man of the match and impressed again in his next two appearances against Denmark and Russia.

However, McCarthy remained faithful to the squad that qualified for the World Cup meaning Healy was left at home, though as the Roy Keane affair began, he was called up when the former captain pulled out only to be told te following day that Keane had changed his mind.

When Keane was kicked out of the squad, the FAI tried in vain to get a special dispensation to allow Healy to join the squad, but this request was turned down. He is set to be a regular in the squad over the next few years and grabbed his first goal against Finland.
