GROUP 2 - 12 June 1988
England 0 v 1 Republic of Ireland (Houghton 6)
Neckarstadion, Stuttgart
Attendance - 51,373
This was the Republic of Irelands first game in a major finals tournament, and what a first apponent. Ray Houghton picked a great day to get his first goal for the Republic, as he looped a header into the corner of the English net. Songs, poems and stories have been written about that day Razor took advantage of a mix-up between English defence and keeper. And with more than 80 minutes left on the clock, the Republic of Ireland held on for the famous victory.

Republic of Ireland 1 (Whelan 38) v 1 USSR (Protassov 74)
Niedersachsenstadion, Hanover

Ronnie Whelans goal was one of the goals of the Euro 88' tournament when he met it with either a brilliant left-footed volley in mid-air or a part of his shin. Does not really matter...IT WENT IN. We failed to capitilise on second half chances and the Russians unfortunately equalised
