Gary Breen Fact File

GARY BREEN-Current Domestic Club, Sunderland A.F.C.

The only redundant Irish man, with no Domestic team, to play in a World Cup. Garys' true footbal talent came to the attention of the World and the doubtful Irish Fans during the qualifiers for, and the World Cup 2002 itself. Mick McCarthy stood by the Republic of Ireland center back and did it pay off with Breen's World Cup performances.

Injuries have not helped him not only at International but also at Domestic level. However Breen is a good footballer, and he reads the game very well. He is still a first choice at center back for Ireland, with our options slightly light in that area, although Cunningham and Dunne work well together, while Andy O'Brien is not that strong in the centre.

The London native Irish defender was part of the Republic of Ireland side that overcame Iran in Tehran, during the play-off to ensure a trip to Japan and South Korea.

Gary was without a club in Japan 2002, having refused to accept a deal offered to him by new Sky blues boss Gary McAllister. In Roy Keanes absence Breen captained Ireland. Gary signed for West Ham on July 29th 2002. Since his arrival at Upton Park, he has failed to nail down a starting berth, although he has remained in Brian Kerrs' plans as a starting central defender.
