John had loan spells in his prefessional career at Belgian side Royal Antwerp, and Second Division Bournemouth. He can play on both sides of defence, and has played for the Republic of Ireland many times at Under-21 level.

John earned his first senior cap on 15 August 2001, when he came on as an 84th minute substitute at home to Croatia. Unfortunately, the debut ended in disappointment when John gave away a penalty in injury time, enabling the Croatians to make the score 2-2.

With the Rio Ferdinand injury in August 2002, John made the United first team, and has held onto a regular starting spot since.
