World Cup, Japan Korea 2002

Mick McCarthys first successful qualification as manager of the Republic of Ireland. First of all he sent his Captain Roy Keane home in disgrace after a bust up, so we had to go through the tournament with a 22 man squad. After a daunting qualification group including Portugal and Holland, we defied all odds, but did not finish the group on top, and had play a two leg play-off with Iran, with Ireland winning 1-2 on agg. After beating Holland 1-0 at Lansdowne Road with a Jason McAteer strike on the 73rd minute, Holland were not in the World Cup. But our "Holland" (Matt) was! - Group E, Cameroon, Germany, Saudi Arabia

Round 1

Ibaraki, 5th June, Kashima Stadium

Republic of Ireland 1 (Keane) v 1 Germany (Klose)

On a day which saw Captain Steve Staunton win his 100th Cap for the Republic of Ireland, the game against Germany was nothing short of pure genius in both commitment and hard work. A 92nd minute equaliser from Robbie Keane was probably the most important goal, of the many high-light of our adventure in the tournament. If it hadnt been for Germanys' Kahn, we could have easily won this one.
