Irish Abroad Sat 01/02/03

Sunderland’s Irish contingents battle to stay in the Premier League received a huge blow today with three own goals scored at the Stadium of Light against Dean Kiely’s Charlton Athletic.

Two own goals from Wearside native Michael Proctor and one more from Stephen Wright, all in the first half. The Black Cats now occupy the bottom place in the Premiership table. Kevin Philips scored a consolation penalty with ten minutes remaining. Both Kevin Kilbane and Phil Babb features for the Black Cats and the game finished 1-3 to Charlton.

Birmingham’s Irish contingent - Ken Cunningham, Clinton Morrison & Jeff Kenna, all travelled to the Reebok Stadium to face Bolton, and although there were two Irish blues on the score sheet, Clinton Morrison scored for Birmingham with just under a half hour to go, while Kenny Cunningham opened the scoring with a 12th minute own goal. Bolton took the three points {4-2}.

Steve Finnan's Fulham looked like they would share the points with Arsenal, for the scores were tied right up until the end of the game before Pires struck goal to keep the Gunners on top of the table {2-1}.

Spurs drew {1-1} with Chelsea without the services of Robbie Keane, who failed to over come an ankle injury in time for kick off. Both Steve Carr and Gary Doherty {37mins sub} featured for the visitors.

Gary Kelly was again the only Irish Leeds representative on the field in the squad that lost at Everton {2-0}, that was until the second half when Ian Harte came off the bench.

Richard Dunne’s Man City {Robbie Fowler debut} came up against West Brom at Maine Road, and it was the visitors who took all of the points {1-2}. John O’Shea and Roy Keane's Manchester were on an away visit to St Mary’s – O’Shea started at left back, and then moved to the centre. Man Utd. were the victor’s {0-2}.

In Div II - Irish Striker, Mickey Evans, scored the 3rd goal for Plymouth Argyle at Home Park in their victory {3-1} against Mansfield.

In Div III - Things seem to be gelling together nicely for Roddy Collin’s Carlisle, as the ‘Cumbrian’ Blues continued their winning ways today again Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium {1-2} – Carlisle’s second goal came from Dublin centre forward, Richie Foran. Carlisle Utd. now move up to 19th in the table

And Finally, Exeter City’s pride and joy, Lewisham born Irish striker, Sean Devine, scored in their 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury today at St James – Devine’s third goal in as many games.
