No Kennedy or Butler in the premier league next season

Wolves failed to turn around last week’s 3-1 defeat at the hands of outsider’s Norwich, in the second leg ot the Div I playoff semi-finals. Although Wolves won last night {1-0}, on the night Norwich went through on the aggregate score. Success for Wolves would have seen Republic of Irelands, Paul Butler and Mark Kennedy play their football at the highest level next season, with promotion to the premier league through the Div I play-offs.

But it was not to be for the Molineux men, who slipped further and further down the Div I table towards the season close putting them in this must win play-off situation. That was their last chance and their dreams of returning to the top flight after 18 years ended in heartache. While Paul Butler played the full match, Kennedy came on as a substitute for the second 45.

Tonight the Lions face Birmingham City at the New Den, with Republic of Irelands Stephen Reid {pictured} , Richard Sadlier and Robbie Ryan looking forward to topflight football, should they get to the final and beat Norwich at Cardiff. And the Lions opponents tonight Birmingham City will see former Republic of Ireland international Jeff Kenna , as ever captain the Blues tonight.

Keith O’Neill injury update

It could be Christmas before Keith O’ Neill is in a position to kick a ball after his latest injury setback – a double leg fracture. Sustained in a freak training ground accident. Keith played his last game for the Republic in Macedonia as a Substitute, 9 /10/1999.

The news from the club is good and they “do” expect him to make a full recovery, however it would be nearer Christmas 2002. That would be a big boost for the player and the club, as Gary Mc Allister is due to take over at Coventry any day as their new boss.

O’Neill had hoped to force his way back into Mick McCarthy’s plans as cover for Ian Harte. O’Neill will miss the starting campaign of the Euro 2004 qualifiers which the Republic kick-off in Moscow to Russia on the weekend of 7/8th Sept this year also. All the very best Keith.
