It had been reported that Roy Keane was to undergo a scan on possible knee ligament damage that could have ruled him out of the rest of United's season and the World Cup. But today, 05th April 2002, Sir Alex Ferguson rejected the claim, insisting:

"It's a hamstring injury, not a knee injury. If we get to the Champions League final on 15 May Roy will play. It's a straightforward torn hamstring and he will be out for four to six weeks. Roy's injury is a blow for the lad, particularly with the semi-finals looming. It's disappointing for him bearing in mind that he missed the final in 1999. So I think the players owe him a final and hopefully we will get there".

Keane's agent Michael Kennedy also insisted that Keane would be able to play in the World Cup. Kennedy said:

"Roy told me on his return from Spain that he is confident that he will be available for the World Cup finals".
