Joe Murphy makes first Premiership start

Joe Murphy made his first Premiership start against Shay Givens Newcastle today, but Murphy and his West Brom teammates were unlucky to go home with not a single point.

Republic of Ireland U21 shot-stopper, Murphy, came up against his hero Shay Given at St. James Park, due to Baggies first choice keeper Russell Hoult currently serving a one-game suspension. But despite the visitors taking an early lead within the half hour, the Magpies levelled things just before the half time whistle with an Alan Shearer goal, resulting from a free kick which was awarded when Murphy picked up the ball from a back pass. Andy O’Brien was cautioned in the second half, and with 20 minutes left the home side finished things off (2-1), again with a Shearer goal

Highflying Middlesboro retained their 3rd position in the Premiership with a home win (2-0) over Bolton wanderers. Jason Gavin did not feature at all for the home side, and Dubliner Gareth Farrelly played the second 45 for Bolton

Republic of Ireland midfielder Rory Delap was part of the Saints side who took all three points at St. Mary’s over Keegans Man. City (2-0). Richard Dunne did not feature for City as he is currently on a training programme to reach match fitness

Birmingham City visited Upton Park today and brought maximum points home with them (1-2) courtesy of 2 Stern John goals. Clinton Morrison came face to face with Republic of Ireland teammate Gary Breen of West Ham, and ‘sloppy’ defending from Breen allowed John his first of two after just three minutes of play

In Div I: a penalty was not enough to deny Pompey from sharing the points at Millmoor. Portsmouth were 3-1 up at half time, and former Republic of Ireland U21 Alan Lee, scored from the spot kick. The Millers threw everything at the visitors, but it was not enough as they went down to their first home defeat of the season (2-3).
