It was a bad night for Republic of Ireland internationals Steve Carr, Robbie Keane and Gary Doherty, as Tottenham crashed out of the Worthington Cup at the hands of Div I Burnley at Turfmoor.
Carr provided the cross for Gus Poyet from a corner, and Spurs took the lead putting the visitors in front. Keane came on for the second half but the Dubliner did not start due to a mild shoulder problem.
Keane missed a golden opportunity from 12 yards out just after Burnley equalised, but it was a matter of minutes before Burnley took the lead and held on to progress to the 4th round of the competition (2-1). Gary Doherty featured for the last 10 minutes. Good news for the Republic of Ireland was that of Steve Carr’s overall performance. He has without doubt returned to his form of old, and his ball delivery from set play was exceptional.
Sunderland got their first win under new manager Howard Wilkinson, with two Irish Black Cats on the team sheet. Mark Rossiter, who was recalled from Irish U19 international duty, played in defence and Cliff Byrne remained on the bench.
