Kennedy back with a Howl / Kelly calm as ever

Republic of Ireland winger, Mark Kennedy, featured in his' first' competitive match of the season in Div I this week (Wed), as an unexpected early first half substitute for injured former SwindonTown forward George Ndah

Kennedy, who has been sidelined all of this season, featured for the Molineux men in their 1-1 draw with Div I high-flyers Portsmouth. Kennedy, who had played 90 minutes just two days ago for Wolves in a specially arranged game with Shrewsbury, played his second game of the week and had the following to say, after his long spell in the treatment room after groin surgery:

"I really enjoyed the game (Portsmouth), I felt comfortable - although the groin was beginning to feel a bit tired towards the end. It was a bit unexpected - one minute I was warming up and the next minute I was getting kitted up and running out."

"But that's the way things go. It's worked out well for me and I'm really pleased to be back in the fray. It's just a shame that George took such a nasty knock."

Kelly calm as ever

Former Republic of Ireland international goalkeeper Alan Kelly, ensured that Blackburn progressed to the 4th round proper of the Worthington cup, in a penalty shoot-out with Wallsall, in his first start of the season. Ewood Park

Rovers battled hard with an organised Div I, 16th league placed, Wallsall side, but all was decided after extra time was played, and then in a penalty shoot-out. Alan Mahon initially kept Rovers in the competition with a goal to level things (2-2). Kelly stepped in for USA international, Brad Friedel whom Rovers boss Souness decided to rest for the cup clash. And Kelly responded with some fine first half saves, and an all-important penalty save, which allowed Rovers to keep up the fight to retain the Worthing Cup trophy (5-4 Rovers progress on pens).

Republic of Ireland international winger, Alan Mahon, bagged a brace of goals, one to bring the sides level (2-2), and then another in the penalty shoot-out. Damien Duff did not feature as he too was rested.

The 4th round draw will take place, this Saturday (9 Nov) @ 2.30 p.m. on Sky's Saturday 'Soccer Saturday' show.
