Irish abroad Sat 07/12/02

Wimbledon striker David Connolly bagged a brace today (Sat) against Preston in the League – his 13th goal in 9 games taking the Willesden - born Irishman the second highest scorer in Div I so far this season.

Although Preston took the early lead at ‘Deepdale’, visiting Wimbledon took the points (3-5) Connolly struck his first with five minutes remaining in the first half, and then his second – from the spot – with under a half hour to go. The Dons took the points.

Also in Div I, Mark Kennedy and Denis Irwin’s Wolves beat promotion rivals Norwich (1-0) – the Molineux men’s goal came from Chelsea on-loan striker Carlton Cole. Irish defender Paul Butler remained on the bench for Wolves.

FA Cup Rd 2:

Republic of Ireland U21 winger Steven Hunt assisted Brentford to the next round by scoring against York with minutes to go at Bootham crescent (1-2). Roddy Collins Irish contingent drew with Scunthorpe (0-0) and the replay will now go to Brunton Park.

Morecambe knocked ‘10-man Chester’ out of the cup today, with Irish-man Daryl Clare on target again for the Conference outfit Chester.

Irish midfielder ‘Willie Boland’ scored one of three for Cardiff in their white washing of Conference side Margate. Ennis native Boland scored midway through the first half.

Republic of Ireland U19 international Reiner Moor was on target also for Div III Exeter in their win (3-1), again over Conference outfit Dag. & Red.
