Gary Kelly Charity / Testimonial match, Elland Road, 07/05/02. Leeds 1 - Celtic 4

Its over ten years now since Leeds Scout, "Paddy Hillier" discovered Gary Kelly. And what a discovery the Drogheda born talent has been for both country and club. In a day marked with joy for Kelly he is named in Micks' 23 man squad for Korea. There was also sadness as tonights charity / testimonial match was in honour of Garys' sister Mandy, who died of cancer four years ago. With his family all over from Ireland for the celebrations ( all 65 of them! ), the evening had added significance with Gary donating all proceeds to cancer charities as a mark of respect to his sister . Gary Kelly's charity night game against Glasgow Celtic ended in a 4-1 defeat for Leeds, but the Republic of Ireland international enjoyed a memorable night. And charities in both Leeds in England, and Drogheda in the Republic of Ireland, will benefit from all of the proceeds from tonights' game. Gary played the full 90 minutes, with his Republic of Ireland colleagues' Ian Harte (Substituted on 63 minutes), Robbie Keane (Played first 45) and Stephen McPhail (Played second 45). As for Celtic, Colin Healy was remarkable in the midfield with a taste of "anger" in his play, as if in response to his disapointment at "not" going to Korea with our Boys.

The Real Winners

Kelly is Celtics' number one fan and his wife even bought him a season ticket recently. Gary was honoured to play against the Bhoys, as they have been his favourite club since he was a boy, and still are.

With Goals' for Celtic from Thompson (21 mins), Larsson (25 mins), Hartson (55 mins) and Maloney (62 mins), it would only prove that the Bhoys can come and compete with the big boys in the English Premier League. The Leeds' goal came from Bowyet on 28 minutes.

A defeat on the night but the real winners were Gary Kelly and the two cancer charities who will benefit from his kind generosity.
