Early Squad announcements, Pre Finland Fixture

Steve Finnan

Fulham F.C. have confirmed that Republic of Ireland right back, Steve Finnan , has been called up for the Friendly against Finland, on August 21. Finnan has been nursing an ankle injury that he sustained during a Fulham reserve pre-season friendly. Prior to this injury he was involved in clash of heads on the training ground, Fulham were preparing for their Intertoto away leg clash with Greek side Egaleo. Steve was experiencing headaches and nausea, and on medical it was recommended that the Republic of Ireland defender remained at home in England. Finnan is now back in training, and will be ready for clash in Helsinki

Stephen Reid & Richard “Sads” Sadlier

Millwall F.C. too have received a request for Stephen Reid and Richard Sadlier or “ Sads ” to participate also. Sadlier will almost certainly be Niall Quinn’s long-term replacement, and it will be interesting to see just how well Robbie Keane and Sads link together.

Stephen Reid on the other hand is not holding any injury, and should relish the thought of lining up with the Boys. Sads has undergone Surgery to repair a hip injury, and has been back in training during this pre-season. He stands at a staggering 6 foot 2", and his ability to control a ball under pressure is that of on par with Quinny. And despite injury last season he managed no more than 17 goals for Millwall. He will be doing everything possible to establish himself in the line-up for the Republic of Ireland National Team as the Euro 2004 qualifiers approach

Steve Carr

And even more relieving to know, is that Steve Carr has played 90 minutes for three consecutive matches. It has been a long but steady road to recovery for the Dubliner, but his progress has impressed Spurs boss Hoddle. Slowly does it now Steve.

Holland linked with Villa?

Unless Mattie Holland wants to stay with Ipswich, to spearhead their imminent return to the Premiership, it may be the only reason that the Republic of Ireland midfielder will hang around. After his outstanding displays in the 2002 World Cup Finals, including his goal which kicked-off our World Cup campaign with Cameroon in a 1-1 draw, Mattie belongs in the Premiership. Aston Villa “has” made enquiries about the possibility of a move to the Midlands, so it remains to be seen.
