Veteran Coyle on target again

Capped once at senior level for the Republic of Ireland, Owen Coyle was on target again today for Scottish Div I Falkirk. Coyle signed for Falkirk (nicknamed the “Bairns”) in May of this year, when the then 35 year-old was without a club after moving from cash strapped Airdrie on a free. In the “Bairns” final two games of last season, Owen scored in both of them, and in last week’s opening day of the Scottish Div I season, he scored against his former club Airdrie, in Falkirk’s 1-3 win. Like veteran Niall Quinn at Sunderland, Coyle is also player coach for the Bairns.

Aged 36, his personal fitness levels are on par with new Derry City signing, David Kelly - former Republic of Ireland international. And like Kelly, Coyle has made his way around the football circuit, with spells at previous clubs including Dumbarton, Clydebank, Airdrie, & Bolton, to name but a "few"!.

Owen signed as a schoolboy with now Scottish 2nd Div. Dumbarton when he was just 13, and back then he plied his trade as a midfielder, although these days without any doubt his natural position is as a striker. Coyle’s one and only senior cap was against Holland (A) in a friendly in 1994, which Ireland won by a goal to nothing.
