Irish Goals - Worthington and CIS Cup's / Souness off again

Starting in Scotland with the CIS Cup rd. 1, veteran Republic of Ireland striker Owen Coyle was on target again taking his goal tally to five so far this season, and subsequently joint top scorer in the Scottish first Division.

Tonight also saw the kick-off in preliminary stages of the Worthington Cup, and former Black Cat Brendan McGill netted for Roddy Collin’s Carlisle United, but the Irish midfielder’s goal could not stop the Cumbrian’s early exit from the competition at Rotherham, loosing 3-1. Trevor Molloy made his comeback after serving a two-match ban, while Richie Foran and Brian Shelly didn’t feature as both men were in the last of a three game suspension

Watford and former Republic of Ireland striker Dominic Foley made it two goals in two games, as the Cork born striker scored for the Hornets on the 74th minute, in their 1-2 defeat to visitors Luton. In light of Luton’s shock win over Watford, the evening was marred by crowd violence at Vicarage road.

Notts County visited Oldham Athletic, and although Republic of Ireland U21 international Paul Heffernan got a second half goal, it was not enough to help the Magpies progress any further in the competition, final score 3-2.

Souness off again

Blackburn Boss Graham Souness has said that the injury suffered by Damien Duff while on International duty with the Republic of Ireland is “Huge blow”

Duff sustained a thigh injury in the Republic of Irelands 4-2 defeat in Moscow with Russia at the weekend, and is being ruled out of domestic action for at least three weeks. The Dubliner will also miss out on European Football with Blackburn in the UEFA Cup.

Speaking today Souness comments were: “Duffer came back with a thigh strain and that’s that. He’s been on fire recently and it’s a huge blow to be without him. We are very disappointed, but these things happen and we have got to get on with it”. Souness is still insistent that the club should be compensated by the FAI for the injury sustained by Damien, while on duty with Ireland
