The Mighty Quinn retires

The Republic of Irelands all-time record goal scorer ' Niall Quinn ' has retired from playing football aged 36, and the Dubliner will ‘NOT’ be taking up a coaching roll at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland played Tottenham in the League today at the Stadium of Light, and it was the Wearsider's first victory (2-0) in the league this year at home. But the day itself belonged to Niall Quinn, who announced his retirement at half time from the game after nearly 20 years service; due to an ongoing back problems.

Quinn did stress that Black Cats boss, Howard Wilkinson’ had offered him a job a the club – an ambassador roll - but the former Irish striker will take a couple of weeks off, and he himself does not know what may happen. He scored 69 goals in 181 starts for the Black Cats and has hit 167 goals in his 484-game career which spans back 19 years.

Niall also handed over the cheque for Ster£1.mil to the two charities who benefited directly from his benefit night, ‘A NIGHT WITH NIALL’ which was played on May 14th this year. The cheque was presented at the game today also.

Capped 91 times for his country, Quinn’s last cap was against v Spain (Sub 54 mins), Suwon, Last 16, World Cup Finals, 16 June 2002
