Peter Reid shows interest in Managers job / Tommy Butler injury update

Former Sunderland boss and Everton legend, 'Peter Reid' says he would be interested in talking to the FAI about the vacant Republic of Ireland manager's job, should he be approached

Talk of a dream double-act with Irish hero 'Niall Quinn' has been subject of latest speculation in the UK, since the Mighty Quinn's retirement at the weekend. Reid, when in charge on Wearside, was familiar with several Irish players such as Quinn, Kilbane, Babb, McAteer and Butler. And there remains still a '15' strong Irish contingent currently on Sunderland's books.

Reid also stated that he has always had a soft spot for Ireland and would consider a return to management if the country's bosses were to ask him.

"It's a country that's close to my heart". I'd be interested in talking to them, but I don't want to tout myself for the job. All of my relatives originate from Ireland, it's a fantastic country and they've got some good players. It's something I've read about and something I wouldn't dismiss."

Tommy Butler injury update

Republic of Ireland and Sunderland winger, 'Thomas Butler', may have a longer spell in the treatment room, as the Ballymun born winger has suffered a setback with his hamstring injury.

Toward the end of October, the Black cats were victors (3-1) in the reserve Tyne Tees derby with Middlesboro, and Butler limped off, pulling up with a hamstring injury. But when returning to training on Monday this week, the Irish international suffered another reaction and could now be ruled out for a of weeks. The initial diagnosis was three weeks, which would have seen Butler return about now.

Both Howard Wilkinson and Steve Cotterell were at the reserve clash, a game in which Butler scored, however the new Sunderland duo have seen a mere '40' minutes of the Irish international in action. Butler would have featured in the first team somehow, as the Black cats treatment room is currently overstocked with players including Sorenson, Myhre, Arca, McAteer, Reyna, Piper and Bellion.
