Irish abroad Sat 14/12/02

It was a mixed day for our Irish abroad with three Irish men, Steve Staunton, Richie Foran & John Sheridan shown red cards today (Sat) for Aston Villa, Carlisle and Oldham respectively.

Staunton picked up two yellow cards in the midlands derby against West Brom at Villa Park, and the Dundalk natives second offence was deemed violent conduct by referee Mr Dean. It was Stan’s 7th yellow card of the season, having just returned from a one-match ban this week. Waterford-native John O’Shea took his place at left back for the mid-day kick off at Old Trafford against under fire West Ham. Man U were out and out winners (3-0) and Gary Breen made a substitute appearance, literally with minutes to go. John O’Shea displayed a man of the match performance, and subsequently received the bottle of Champagne!

Irish midfielder Lee Carsley found the back of the net at Goodison Park for Everton cancelling out Andy Cole’s 6th minute strike. But is was wonder-kid Wayne Rooney first half strike that ensured Everton took the 3 points – lifting them to fourth in the table, one place above the reds of Merseyside.

In Div I: Rotherham put six goals past Burnley and Galway native Alan Lee netted two of the six goals for the Millers against his old club at Turf Moor. The visitors took the 3 points away with them (2-6). On loan Liverpool winger Richie Partridge scored again for Coventry in their 2-0 win over Wolves at the Molineux. Irwin, Kennedy and Butler (bench) were all on the team sheet for the home side.

In Div II: Republic of Ireland U21 winger Steven Hunt had his name added to the score sheet after just six minutes against Chesterfield at Griffin Park (2-1). Irish Striker Colin Larkin bagged a brace for Mansfield in their 4-0 win over the sea-sider’s of Blackpool at Field Mill. Former Republic of Ireland international John Sheridan was sent for an early bath after picking up his 2nd yellow card for Oldham today against Wigan. It was the visitors who took the three points (0-2) away with them from Boundary Park.

In Div III: Roddy Collins Carlisle suffered their 7th home defeat of the season at Brunton Park against Wrexham (1-2). Dubliner Richie Foran had his name in the referee’s book after scoring Carlisle’s goal after just 5 minutes, but the Irish striker was then sent off with just injury time to play. Dessie Byrne overcame his back problem to start for Carlisle men along with Willie McDonagh (returned from 3 match ban), Brian Shelly and Brendan McGill (sub 54 min).

Conference League: Daryl Clare featured for Chester at Hilton Park against Leigh RMI and netted a brace, which is now four goals in two games for the Irish Striker.

And finally in the S.P.L. - Irish defender Alan Maybury scored the only goal for Hearts against Patrick Thistle at the Tynecastle Stadium. Maybury subsequently left it until the 90th minute to secure the points for Hearts
