Irish Abroad Sat 15/02/03'

In Div II today former Republic of Ireland U21 International Paul Heffernan scored a 67th minute goal for Notts County in their 2-0 victory over Bristol City at Meadow Lane.

Irish U21 international Jonathan Daly was on target today for Stockport County but visitors Oldham maintained their impressive away record (the only English team unbeaten away from home in the leagues this season) with a 1-2 victory at Stockport’s Edgeley Park.

In Div III, Roddy Collins Carlisle United had a day off as the Cumbrian Blues were due to travel to Oxfords Kassam Stadium, but after a mid-day pitch inspection referee Joe Ross took the decision to call off the game after a heavy over night frost.

Also in Div II, JJ Melligan who made his Irish U21 bow last Tuesday against Scotland at Rugby Park, scored a 20th minute goal for his on-loan club Kidderminster Harriers against Torquay today at the Aggborough Stadium.

And in Div III, Monaghan native, Barry Conlon scored his 12th goal of the season for Darlington today in their 1-1 draw on their away travels at Lincoln.

In the Conference League, Former Republic of Ireland International and current Southport Manager Mick Walsh saw his side draw {1-1} at Leigh RMI, while Gary Kelly {brother of former Irish international shot stopper Alan Kelly} who joined Northwich Victoria earlier in February let in only one goal as the ‘Vic’s’ drew {1-1} with Hereford at Wincham Park.

FA Cup 5th Round

Things went from bad to worse for Sunderland’s Irish contingent on Wearside today as the Black Cats exited the FA Cup after Watford came to the Stadium of Light and progressed to the quarter final on a controversial penalty kick.

The hope from Wearside fans was that Sunderland’s cup run would eventually have a positive affect on their League run already as the Black Cats currently occupy the bottom of the Premiership table. And with Sunderland’s two main rivals in the Northeast – Middlesboro & Newcastle – both out of the cup, the Wearside faithful’ hopes were slashed today when a controversial penalty awarded to Watford was the only goal that separated the sides.

Sorenson initially saved Watford’s penalty, when Phil Babb ran into the Penalty box to clear, but then the referee allowed the penalty to be retaken, and Watford’s Tommy Smith kicked home at his second attempt.

Jason McAteer returned from a five-month injury lay off to feature for Sunderland today along with Irish internationals Phil Babb, Kevin Kilbane & Irish U21 International, and Sean Thornton.

Also in the fifth round at St Mary’s Stadium, Southampton beat Norwich {2-0} with the help of Rory Delap, but Delap came off after just a half hour with what appeared to be an ankle injury. The injury was the result of a late tackle by a Norwich player – an incident that was not noticed by the referee.

FA Cup holders Arsenals beat John O’Shea’s Man Utd. {0-2} at Old Trafford. O’Shea remained on the bench for the home side, while Irish Goalkeeper Paddy Kenny {pictured} kept a clean sheet at Bramall Lane against Walsall to allow his side ‘Shef Utd’ to also progress to the last eight of the cup

SPL & Scot. Div I

Noel Hunt finally tasted success in Scotland as Dunfermline got back to winning ways today against Hibs in the SPL.

Irish U21 internationals Noel Hunt and Gary Dempsey were on the bench for Dunfermline however it was Stevie Crawford brace and Gary Mason’s opener that helped 10-man Dunfermline to a 3-1 win over disappointing Hibernian.

Hunt made a late substitute appearance with a couple of minutes remaining while Dempsey remained on the bench. It was Hunts first win at his new side ‘The Pars’ since his arrival at East End Park in January.

Scottish Division I: Former Republic of Ireland International and current Falkirk player/coach Owen Coyle scored his scored his seventh goal in six games {15th of the season} today as the Bairns beat St Mirren.

Coyle joined Falkirk from Airdrie last Summer and was subsequently appointed player/coach, but when Bairns boss ‘Ian McCall’ departed for Dundee earlier in January this year, Coyle’s roll became all the more evident as both Coyle and Asst Coach John Hughes try to maintain Falkirk’s position at the top of the Scot.
