Kevin Kilbane scored his first goal of the season at Goodison Park today while Drogheda native Sean Thornton marked his Premiership debut for the Black Cats with another impressive display.

Thornton, who signed from Tranmere Rovers under controversial circumstances last summer, was withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland U20 squad earlier in the week by Sunderland boss Howard Wilkinson. Thornton took care of Sunderland’s corners from both sides, and he was close on goal with a 25-yard strike after just 11 minutes, but struck wide. U.S.A. international Brian McBride secured the victory {2-1} for Everton with a brace in the second half.

Damien Duff earned Blackburn Rovers a point {1-1} with an early first half goal at Ewood Park, while Blues substitute Stern John drew the sides level with ten minutes remaining.

Shay Givens kept a clean sheet for Newcastle victory {2-0} over visiting Man City at St James, while for Charlton’s Irish keeper, Dean Kiely, it looked like a clean sheet was on the cards only for Bolton’s Djorkaeff goal with minutes remaining. The game finished 1-1.

No Irish men found the back of the net in Div I, but Richie Partridge was on the Coventry side that drew {1-1} with Notts Forest at the City ground. Denis Irwin, Paul Butler & Mark Kennedy featured in the Wolves side which drew {1-1} with Wimbledon at Molineux. The Dons were without the services of in form Irish striker David Connolly, who is nursing a hamstring injury.

Div III: York City were granted a financial life line by the Supporters Trust after the Administrators failed to agree on a small amount of bids from interested Buyers on Thursday. And the Minster men repaid them with a home victory {3-1} over Swansea at Bootham crescent today, with a brace from Peter Duffield and the third from Kilkenny native striker Michael Reddy who is currently on loan from Sunderland.

Carlisle lost {1-0} at St James Park, while Lewisham born Irish striker Sean Devine provided the assist for Exeters goal. Brain Shelly, Willie McDonagh, Peter Murphy, Dessie Byrne Brendan McGill were all on the starting team sheet for Roddy Collins Cumbrian Blues.
