Irish Abroad - 19 October 2002

It was a bad day for the Leeds & Newcastle United Irish as both sides lost in the Premiership today, but Everton’s Lee Carsley was part of the inspiring team that finally put a stop to Arsenals unbeaten record.

Republic of Ireland midfielder Lee Carsley seems to have secured his place in the Everton first team, and it was his shot off the post that was finally tapped in by Radzinski in the first half. The visitors took the lead early on, but Goodison’s new sensation, 16-year-old Wayne Rooney got his all important first premiership goal for the club. The game finished 2-1 to Everton ending Arsenal's ten month unbeaten run.

Newcastle travelled to Ewood Park, and after just five minutes Greek international ‘Dabizas’ was shown a red card for a handball. The Toon's Alan Shearer still managed to get his 300th & 301st club goal, but the home side dominated proceedings by a staggering 5-2 victory. Both Given & O’Brien featured for the Mag's while Damien Duff did not feature for Blackburn due to injury

Leeds entertained Liverpool at Elland Road, with Stephen McPhail and Ian Harte featuring for the home side, and Gary Kelly settling for a place on the bench. McPhail was substituted with 15 minutes to go, while the visitors took all three points by a single goal.

Sunderland’s new Boss ‘Howard Wilkinson did not have a dream start to his return to management. The Black Cats lost to bottom of the table West Ham at the Stadium of Light (0-1). Republic of Ireland’s Gary Breen did not start for the visitors, but he did play the last twenty-five minutes. Babb and Kilbane started for the Black Cats, while Quinn came on as a sub, midway through the second half. Butler did not make the team sheet. West Ham now move to 16th in the table.

While Richard Dunne seems to have completed a successful personal training & fitness programme for Man City, he remained on the bench at Maine Road. Visitors Chelsea, thrashed the home side (3-0), courtesy of 2 Zola goals,and 1 from Dutch international, Hasselbaink.

The West midlands Derby between West Brom and Birmingham at the Hawthorns ended n a draw (1-1), while the home side had keeper Russell Hoult back in the frame after a one game suspension, relegating Republic of Ireland U21 keeper Joe Murphy to the bench.

John O’Shea and Manchester Utd. travelled to London to face Fulham today, and the Waterford born defender featured for the full 90 minutes for the visitors. The game ended in a draw (1-1), had it not been for Bartez penalty save midway through the second half, the home side could have taken all of the points. Finnan featured for Fulham after recovering from a knee injury, which saw the Republic of Ireland right back out of contention for last Wednesdays Euro 2004 defeat against Switzerland at Lansdowne.

Div I: Arsenal and on-loan striker Graham Barrett netted in Brighton’s defeat (2-4) to visitors Shef. Utd. In Div II: Brentford and Republic of Ireland U21 winger Steven Hunt scored in the game with visiting side Port Vale (1-1). Martin Devaney too scored in the draw (1-1) between Cheltenham and QPR.

In Div III: Roddy Collins Carlisle travelled to Macclesfield, and despite a late second half Brendan McGill goal, both sides shared the points (2-2).

In Scottish Div I: Owen Coyle continued his scoring run, as the former Republic of Ireland, Paisley born Striker netted twice in Falkirk’s 3-0 hammering of his former club Ayr. Coyle is the second highest scorer in the league with 7 goals in 10 games.
