Byrne joins Irish loanees

Sunderland defender Clifford Byrne has joined Scunthorpe United on a month's loan – the third Irishman to go out on loan since the arrival of the new Black Cats duo – Howard Wilkinson and Steve Cotterell.

Dubliner Byrne, a Republic of Ireland U21 international, trained with the Third Division club today and could feature in their game with Swansea on Saturday. He has featured heavily for the reserves for the past two seasons, and earlier in October he netted a hat trick in the ‘Durham Co. Cup’ against Brandon Utd.

Earlier this month, Republic of Ireland U19 international Sean Thornton joined Second Division Blackpool on an initial one- month loan deal. And also in November former Irish youth international, Michael Reddy joined Div III York City at Bootham crescent.

Thornton was signed by former Sunderland boss 'Peter Reid' from Tranmere during the summer, with an independent tribunal finally intervening in the overall transfer fee as Thornton was to have allegedly trained with Tranmere during the Summer months of this year, without Tranmere's permission.
