Irish youth in Reserves display / Duff injured in League cup Semi

Manchester City Reserves 2-1 Sunderland AFC Reserves

Sunderland Reserves took on Manchester City reserves on Tuesday evening with no fewer than six Irish youth internationals on the team sheets.

Former Home-Farm striker, Keith Graydon, twice went close for Howard Wilkinson's men in the first half but it was a frustrating evening for the Black Cats who found it difficult to break City down.

Manchester City's side contained Republic of Ireland youth internationals Brian Murphy, Glen Whelan & former Cherry Orchard player William 'Willo' Flood. As for Sunderland, there were three Irish Black Cats in the squad including Graydon - David Sullivan, while former Stella Maris midfielder Niall Flynn remained on the bench.

Shuker & Ritchie put City, the home side, comfortably in front. Irish youth international & in form striker, Keith Graydon, did pull a goal back for the visiting Black Cats, although in the second half there were fewer chances for either side. City's best efforts were arriving via crosses from the right by Willo Flood (2nd half sub}.

Duff injured again

Republic of Ireland international Damien Duff limped out of tonight’s (Wed) League Cup Semi-final 2 leg after just 33 minutes with what appeared to be a hamstring problem

Duff has had a recurring hamstring injury for the best part of this season, and has missed crucial league games for the Lancashire outfit, including the Republic of Irelands last game – a draw {0-0} with Greece in Athens in November 2002.

Both sides were level from the first leg {1-1}, but United old boy Andy Cole gave the home side the advantage with a lob over Bartez’s head on 11 minutes.

But Manchester United responded with a Brace from Paul Scholes before the break

Utd scored one more, from the spot, after Brad Friedel brought van Nistelroy doen in the box. The game finished 1-3 in favour of Manchester United {2-4agg}, and Manchester United will now meet Liverpool in the Final in Cardiff on March 2nd.
