Given v Murphy / McAteer injury concern

Republic of Ireland U21 goalkeeper Joe Murphy could come head to head with Shay Given, when West Bromwich Albion go head to head with the Magpies at St James.

Baggies keeper Russell Hoult was sent off for a foul on Liverpool’s Michael Owen last Saturday and the Dubliner was handed his chance, immediately saving Owen’s penalty with his first touch in the game.

Hoult subsequently received a one-match league ban for the incident, and the Baggies next league fixture is this coming Monday at home with Blackburn Rovers, with a Worthington Cup rd 2 tie away to Wigan Athletic on the Tuesday.

The Baggies meet the Mag’s on Saturday 05th October, so it remains to be seen as to what choice Gary Megson will make

McAteer sidelined with stomach injury

Republic of Ireland international Jason McAteer will be sidelined from the Sunderland squad for a the moment, after the midfielder sustained a stomach injury against Middlesboro in the Black Cats 3-0 defeat at the Riverside Stadium on September 10th.

It is believed that McAteer played through both the Fulham and the Tyne and Wear derby with Newcastle taking painkillers, and will miss Sunderland’s premier league clash with Aston Villa this Saturday, and a Worthington Cup Rd. 2 match with Cambridge United on October 1.

McAteer has strained the muscles in his stomach, and the severity of the injury and his layoff will be known in a matter of days. Mick McCarthy may have to go back to the drawing board on the right flank of midfield.
