George starts on the bench for Bury

Liam George will spend another day on the bench today, as Bury welcome Div III visitors Shrewsbury Town. The former Republic of Ireland European Championship youth winner has been with the Manchester side on a short term 3-month contract since the beginning of August, featuring three times as a substitute scoring once in pre-season.

Liam has had his fair amount of injuries, and cementing his place, as first team choice has been difficult. After unsuccessful trials with Clydebank, Cambridge, Colchester, Gillingham, and more recently Sheffield United, the Luton-born Irishman has at last secured a contract, regardless of whether it is short tem or not.

Bury Boss “Andy Preece” comments about the arrival of Liam George were positive enough for the Shakers Boss to say: “If Liam does well he’ll be offered a longer deal. He is a Republic of Ireland Under-21 international and lots of clubs were interested in him only a season or two ago. There was talk of him going from Luton for big money and I’m delighted to have him here”.

Taylor almost resigned to "NO HOLLAND DEAL"

Aston Villa boss Graham Taylor has all but given up on the prospect of bringing Matt Holland to the West Midlands. Taylor today admitted that he was "desperate" to have both Mark Kinsella and Matt Holland in the heart of the Villa midfield, reflecting on their recent performances for the Republic of Ireland

Taylor said: "I had a long chat with Matt and I would have loved to have taken him and Kinsella. I really thought if we could put Matt and Mark into our midfield then we would have a duo that would compliment each other, as we've seen from the Republic of Ireland.

Matt is very popular at Ipswich, is on a Premiership contract but it's not really about money. But he has a very good quality of life there. He's very settled, his wife and family are very settled. It (the transfer) is looking less likely to happen now”.
