Liam George comeback? / Irish youth bow out gracefully

Liam George, part of the U18 Republic of Ireland UEFA Championship 98 winning team, seems to be making his mark at Div. I Sheffield United. The Blades took Hope Valley League - Derbyshire outfit “Baslow” apart in a staggering 1-14 win. And who put one in the back of the net? Yes, the one and only ‘Liam George’. The Div I. Outfit offered the Luton-born Irish-man a 3-week trial last week and it seems to be a case of “so far so good”.

George has been plagued with both injury and bad luck during his short professional career. Turned 23 in February, he has graced the stage at Youth International level but domestically it has been completely different. After turning down a new contract during the summer 01', Liam stayed at Luton Towns’ Kenilworth Road, on a week-to-week contract. His contract was then paid up by mutual consent and he left Bedfordshire in the search for a new club. Since his injuries he has had trials with Clydebank, Cambridge, Colchester, Gillingham and Rushden and Diamonds to name but a few, but has failed to impress.

A fourth place finish is all that we could manage in this afternoons third place play-off with Slovakia. The games first half ended in a 0-0 situation, with The Republic of Ireland coming out and scoring early into the second half, with a strike from Newcastle United's Stephen Brennan.
