O'Brien nets for the Toon

Both Shay Given and Andy O'Brien played the full 91 minutes in a well fought, well deserved, well needed 6-2 win, at James Park to Everton. The Magpies have not won a game in six, and only last week crashed out of the FA Cup quarter finals by 0-3 at Highbury. Everton on the other hand, are still fighting for their Premiership status under new manager, David Moyes.

Everton took the lead after 5 minutes with when Ferguson seemed hemmed in by United defenders on the edge of the penalty area, but somehow he lobbed the ball goalwards. Shay Given seemed to have it covered, but it dipped at the last moment and dropped under the bar with Given flapping his hands in vain.

The Magpies replied with goals from Shearer and Cort within 15 minutes.Just before half time a misunderstanding arose between Given and three of his defenders about who was going to clear a ball on the edge of the six-yard area. And while they hesitated Niclas Alexandersson nicked in between them to prod the ball over the line for the equaliser.

Given had to look sharp on the re-start to save from Thomas Gravesen who brought the 'keeper to his knees with a crisp drive from just outside the area! Jenas won a corner with a drive that Simonsen should have held. From Robert's corner Everton failed to clear and Andy O'Brien stabbed the ball into the net from six yards! With two more goals from Solano, and one from subsitute Bernard, final score Newcastle United 6 - 2 Everton.
