O'Brien injured as Mags beat Kiev / Connolly 2 in two

Newcastle United’s Champions League adventures are still alive, as the Magpies turned Dynamo Kiev over at St. James Park on Tyneside tonight in their Group E clash, but Andy O’Brien limped off at the end of the first half.

O’Brien came off injured at half time with a muscle spasm, having just recovered from a hamstring injury, and was replaced by ‘Bernard’ for the second half. Shatskikh opened the scoring with a second half strike for the visitors that shook the home side somewhat, and then Gary Speed quickly responded to Kiev’s goal minutes later. A second half penalty from Alan Shearer sealed the points for Newcastle, whose Champions League hopes are still alive. Newcastle must now beat Feyenoord next week. Tonight’s result: 2-1 to the Mag’s.

In Group F, tonight’s shock result was that of Maccabi Haifa beating Man Utd. by a treble of goals in Champions League clash in Cyprus.

John O’Shea twisted his knee slightly toward the end of the first half, but the Irish defender shook off the injury and played the second half. Manchester United found themselves a goal down at half time, and the Israelis netted again early into the second half.

Although United were through to the 2nd round before tonight’s game, first team players such as Beckham, Blanc & Bartez were rested giving youngsters Richardson, Nardiello & Danish forward Timm, their chances at the big time. The game finished in favour of the Israelis, who beat United by ‘3’ clear goals, 1 of them a penalty, halting Man Utds unbeaten record of 17 games in Europe.

Connolly scores again

Republic of Ireland international and Wimbledon striker David Connolly scored for Wimbledon tonight, his second in as many games since his return from injury.

Connolly made it two out of two, scoring on Saturday gone against Sheffield Utd. at Bramall Lane in a 1-1 draw, and again tonight in the Dons win (2-1) over Rotherham at Selhurst Park. Former Republic of Ireland U21, Alan Lee, found the back of the net for the visitors in front of a home crowd of just ‘849’. Lee is now that second highest scorer in Div I, with 10 goals for the Galway man this season so far.

Also in Div I, Richie Partridge scored for Coventry on their visit to Leicester City. The visitors lost (1-2) at the Walkers stadium, but for Partridge it marks his second goal for the Sky Blues in three games, since his loan extension from Liverpool until the end of the season, was agreed on last week.

Finally, Alan Moore found the back of the net for the Clarets, in an eleven-goal thriller between Grimsby & Burney at Blundell Park (6-5).
