Clinton Morrison joins Birmingham City in a four year deal

As expected Clinton Morrison has joined Birmingham City for GBP£4.25mildeal this afternoon. The four-year deal will now benefit Morrison’s plight to fight even more for a first team place in the Republic of Ireland National Squad, as it was imperative that he played top-flight football to guarantee International recognition and success.

He will join fellow countrymen Jeff Kenna and newly signed Republic of Ireland centre back Kenny Cunningham at St Andrews. That now makes three Irish international moving from Div I to top flight Premiership football so far during pre-season 02-03’ – Cunningham & Morrison both to Birmingham City, and Gary Breen to West Ham. In the U21 side Sean Thornton has gone from Div II to the Premiership with Sunderland. And finally Phil Babb who will also be in the Premiership, for he went to Sunderland earlier in May on a Bosman from Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon.

Paul Tierney is his name, and Manchester United is his club. The 19 year old Roscommon born defender has just recently signed a three year deal with the Premiership giants, which will keep the Republic of Ireland U21 at Old Trafford until 2005!

With fellow countrymen, John O’Shea and Roy Keane at his side, it is certain that Paul will be one for the future in the hearts of both the Irish and Manchester United defence. Having recently featured in United's 0-5 win over Chesterfield, it was Tierney's first time in the first team, lining up with Roy Keene and Diego Forlan to name but a few. The Roscommon born centre half/left back was voted “Manchester United, young player of the year 01-02'”, and he has made excellent progress through youth and reserve teams. He was also favoured by Sir Alex Ferguson to travel with the First team for last seasons Worthington Cup fixture with Arsenal.
