Former Republic of Ireland youth international ‘Liam George’ has received the best news in years from Andy Preece at Bury – an extension in his short-term contract.
George, the scorer of the winning penalty against Germany for the Republic of Ireland under-18 team in the UEFA Championship final in Cyprus four years ago, scored his first competitive goal for Manchester Div III side Bury at the weekend.
A man of the match performance on Saturday last - scoring the only goal for Bury in their win (1-0) over Exeter City at Gigg Lane - was what was need to persuade Preece to extend the Luton-born Irish mans contract until the end of December. He has been with Bury, short-term contract basis, since August 2002.
Injury prone George has had trials with Clydebank, Cambridge, Colchester, Gillingham and Rushden to name but a few, but has failed to impress.
