Thomas Butler Fact File

Tommy Butler - Current Domestic Club, Sunderland A.F.C.

Ballymun born Butler is a certainty for the future of the Republic of Ireland National team. He was at Tranmere Rovers at the age of 14 and has been capped at under 15, 16, 17, 18 & 21 levels for the Republic. He was voted the Republic Of Ireland's Under 15 Player Of The Year in 1997, and he also took part in the Youth World Cup in South Africa in January 1999.

He broke into the Sunderland first team with appearances against Liverpool and West Ham during the last six months of last season. At the beginning of 2001-02 season he was on loan to Darlington, where he was voted player of the month.

Essentially he is a right-sided player but can also operate on the left wing. His sudden bursts of pace cause opposing defenders huge problems. After signing a new and improved 4-year deal in the summer of 2002, Tommy is now a regular first team member for the Sunderland first team.
