FOOD CHRISTMAS SIGHTS WANAMAKERS | STORIES FOR A COLD WINTER'S NIGHT Time; December 1995 Location River Rink Philadelphia This story is told to us by Barbara It was a very brisk and cold night as I stood on the ramp overlooking the ice skating rink, a light wind was blowing off the Delaware, to the north was the Ben Franklin bridge, lit up, its light blue silhouette stood out against the night sky, it's cables were like the strings of a giant musical instrument, the cerealean blue light reflected off the choppy waters of the Delaware, and the night sky was filled with twinkling stars. It was in between skating sessions, when the ice is smoothed out, from my vantage point , it looked like a giant wet diamond, slick and shiny. On to the ice walked a young couple, a beautiful woman and a tall lean man, who they were?, I have no idea, friends of the rink manager? possibly, because they were the only two allowed on the fresh smoothed ice at that moment. Suddenly the strains of a familiar Christmas carol came over the loud speakers,"O Holy Night", one that I had heard so many many times, but I had never really paid attention to, I was so sick of Christmas, it seemed like everything bad that could possibly happen to you in your life always happened to me at this time of year, I really grew to dread this time of year. This time though the music and the words jolted me, shooting through me like a bolt of electricity. On the ice the skaters moved to the song with grace and agility and determination ,but there was a gentleness in their movement, they skated as if they felt every note, every word, it was if their bodies became part of the song. Not a mistake or wrong move were made , just beautiful clean fluid motion, they skated as if they were skating for royalty, I do not know if any one else seen their performance with the same eyes that I saw it with, but something touched my heart and opened my eyes and I no longer dread this time of year, I take it nice and slow and look for the beauty that is all around us.
