On January 6, in the year 1412, in the town of Donreemy-la-Pacelle, in the eastern part of France, Joan of Arc was born to poor farmers, Joan went on to become a military and spiritual leader during the battle against the English in the "100" years war, when she was captured she was put on trial for being an heretic and burned at the stake on May 30 1431. In 1898, French sculptor, Emmanuel Fremiets fashioned his gilded bronze statue of Joan of Arc, his model was a 15 year old girl by the name of Valerie Laneau, she too had been born in the town of Donreemy-la-Pacelle on the same day and month , January 6, as Joan had, and at the age of 77 , Valerie was engulfed by flames from an oil lamp that she had been trying to light and she died on May 30, the anniversary of the death of Joan of Arc . Today this statue of Joan of Arc stands on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway( Mr Franklin was our nations first ambassador to France) , designed by 2 Frenchman, modeled after the Champ Elysees in Paris.
