Mt Pleasant

Date:December /1993 Location: Mt Pleasant- Fairmount park- Philadelphia

If you research the past owners of most of Philadelphia's historic homes ,you would have a whos who of history.

Take for example Mt Pleasant, one of several historic mansions that dot Fairmount park, the largest urban park in the world.

The former owners of Mt Pleasant include a pirate, Captain John Macpherson, who emigrated from Scotland and was the original owner and builder of the house.According to John Adams, Macpherson had his arm shot off "twice" in his piratal prusuits, Captain Macpherson had 10 children, one of his sons became the first War of Independance casualty from Philadelphia's wealthy class.

A traitor, Benedict Arnold who brought the house as a wedding gift for his bride but because of a little matter of treason had to soon relocate to England.

A commander, the great nephew of Ben Franklin, Jonathan Williams went on to become the first commandeer of West Point. If only the walls of these historic homes could talk, (some say they do, but that is another story)

Our account begins with Sammy Alicia, an apprentice meatcutter from South Philadelphia;

I was only about 11 years old at the time , and man o man was I ever in love with Christmas, it was fast approaching, you could almost taste it in the air, I jumped at the chance when my mom asked me if I wanted to go take a tour of homes decorated for Christmas, my mind was full of lights, tinsel, candy canes, I was kind of disapointed when I found out it was going to be a tour of these historic homes they have in Fairmount park but at least you got to ride in one of these old time trolleys, I thought at least that would be fun , but being a little spoiled, I was not going to let my mom know that, I gave her a hard time the whole way, until Mt Pleasant that is...

It was getting near dark when we pulled up to Mt Pleasant, there was a long line waiting to get in the front door and in the confusion of the crowd I broke off and went towards the back of the building where there was a large garden which overlooked the Schulkyl river, hey, I wanted to go exploring, out of the corner of my eye I saw this ..figure of a man standing by these group of trees about 100 feet away, I didn't think anything of it, some other tourist getting fresh air probably.

Well I was busy throwing stones toward the river when I went to pick up this large one behind me , I glanced up, that figure of a man was now no more than 10 feet way from me! and he had one arm.

Well to a 11 year old kid that frightened me and I ran like a deer out of there and around to the front of the house where the line of people had gone in. I went to the front door and I could not open it and I am screamng for my mom, I am scared stiff, finally some one opens the door from the inside, and I almost fall in, I go running through the house with the guides chasing me, I make it up to the upstairs where my mom is, and I am completely out of breath, I could not even speak, we were right by the window which faced the garden, I just pointed out there where we both saw this very white misty form lurking in the grove of trees.

Well if that was not enough, when I turned around, I gave another scream out loud, there on the wall was a painting of the man I saw in the garden, but that could not have been because that man had been dead for 200 hundred years!

RECENTLY a security guard reported a pair of red slippers were walking down the steps with no body in them... .
