On a cold January 1st in 1752, Elizabeth Griscom was born into a staunchly Quaker family, the family was involved in the upholstery business which Betsey followed into. On a November night in 1773, Betsey eloped with John Ross , the son of a Episcopalian rector, they crossed the Delaware into Gloucster where they were married, this caused a rift between Betsey and her family because of the inter faith marriage In 1776 , John Ross joined the Pennsylvania militia, while guarding an ammunition cache, it exploded, severely and mortally wounding him In June of 1776, Betsey was approached by George Washington to sew the nations first national flag In June of 1777, Betsey married John Ashbourn at Old Swedes church, she had 2 daughters with Joseph ,one of whom died at 9 months of age. Joseph Ashbourn was captured by the British and thrown into prison where he died in 1782 In 1783 , Betsey married John Claypoole, with Claypoole she had 5 daughters ,one of whom died.Betsey Ross continued working until 1827, she then retired to the town of Abington living with one of her daughters until her death in January 30 1836 According to people who have worked at the Betsey Ross house and numerous visitors, the house is haunted, several people have reported seeing her ghost sitting by the foot of the bed in the museum, one museum director claimed that while in the basement kitchen a disembodied voice distinctly and clearly said "Pardon me" Ever see a ghost?A UFO ?
