The Apostle Santiago (St. James) appears to Charlemagne in a dream

Glorious apostle of Christ, Santiago, while the other apostles and disciples of the Lord went to diverse regions of the world, preached first, according to is said, in Galicia. And immediately he saw in the sky a star trail that began in the sea of Frisia and, extending between Germany and Italy, between Galia and Aquitania, passed directly by Gascu6na, Basque Country, Navarre and Spain until Galicia, in where then it was hidden, undiscovered, the body of Santiago.[1 ] and as Carlomagne watched some times every night, began to think very frequently what would mean.And while with great interest he thought this, a horseman of splendid and much more beautiful appearance of which to say itself can, appeared to him in a dream during the night, saying itself to him: --- What are you doing, my son? To which he said: --- Who you are, Sir? ---I am-he answered-Santiago the apostle, disciple of Christ, son of Zebediah, brother of John the Evangelist, to that with its indescribable grace deigned to the chosen Lord, am next to the sea of Galilea, for, sent to preach in the towns; was killed by King Herod with the sword, and my body rests ignored in Galicia, still shamefully pressed by the sarracens. By this, I am enormously astonished thatyou have not wrenched my burial place from the sarracenos, you to whom so many cities and land have conquered. Thus I let you know that as the Lord you made most powerful of the Earth kings, also has chosen you among all to prepare my way and to release my land from the hands of the Muslims, and acquire for that reason a crown of immeasurable glory. El gloriosísimo apóstol de Cristo, Santiago, mientras los otros apóstoles y discípulos del Señor fueron a diversas regiones del mundo, predicó el primero, según se dice, en Galicia. Después, sus discípulos, muerto el apóstol por el rey Herodes y trasladado su cuerpo desde Jerusalén a Galicia por mar, predicaron en la misma Galicia; pero los mismos gallegos más tarde, dejándose llevar por sus pecados, abandonaron la fe hasta el tiempo de Carlomagno, emperador de los romanos, de los franceses, de los teutones y de los demás pueblos, y pérfidamente se apartaron de ella. Mas Carlomagno, después que con múltiples trabajos por muchas regiones del orbe adquirió, con el poder de su invencible brazo y fortificado con divinos auxilios, distintos reinos, a saber, Inglaterra, Galia, Alemania, Baviera, Lorena, Borgoña, Italia, Bretaña y los demás países, así como innumerables cuidades de un mar al otro, y las arrancó de manos de los sarracenos y las sometió al imperio cristiano, fatigado por tan penosos trabajos y sudores, se propuso no emprender más guerras y darse un descanso. Y en seguida vió en el cielo un camino de estrellas que empezaba en el mar de Frisia y, extendiéndose entre Alemania e Italia, entre Galia y Aquitania, pasaba directamente por Gascuña, Vasconia, Navarra y España hasta Galicia, en donde entonces se ocultaba, desconocido, el cuerpo de Santiago.[1] Y como Carlomagno lo mirase algunas veces cada noche, comenzó a pensar con gran frecuencia qué significaría.Y mientras con gran interés pensaba esto, un caballero de apariencia espléndida y mucho más hermosa de lo que decirse puede, se le aparecío en un sueño durante la noche, diciéndole: ---¿Qué haces, hijo mío? A lo cual dijo él: ---¿Quién eres, señor? ---Yo soy---contestó---Santiago apóstol, discípulo de Cristo, hijo de Zebedeo, hermano de Juan el Evangelista, a quien con su inefable gracia se dignó elegir el Señor, junto al mar de Galilea, para, predicar a los pueblos; al que mató con la espada el rey Herodes, y cuyo cuerpo descansa ignorado en Galicia, todavía vergonzosamente oprimida por los sarracenos. Por esto me asombro enormemente de que no hayas liberado de los sarracenos mi tierra, tú que tantas ciudades y tierras has conquistado. Por lo cual te hago saber que así como el Señor te hizo el más poderoso de los reyes de la tierra, igualmente te ha elegido entre todos para preparar mi camino y liberar mi tierra de manos de los musulmanes, y conseguirte por ello una corona de inmarcesible gloria. El camino de estrellas que viste en el cielo significa que desde estas tierras hasta Galicia has de ir con un gran ejército a combatir a las pérfidas gentes paganas, y a liberar mi camino y mi tierra, y a visitar mi basílica y sarcáfago. Y después de ti irán allí peregrinando todos los pueblos, de mar a mar, pidiendo el perdón de sus pecados y pregonando las alabanzas del Señor, sus virtudes y las maravillas que obró. Y en verdad que irán desde tus tiempos hasta el fin de la presente edad. Ahora, pues, marcha cuanto antes puedas, que yo seré tu auxiliador en todo; y por tus trabajos te conseguiré del Señor en los cielos una corona, y hasta el fin de los siglos será tu nombre alabado. De esta manera se apareció Carlomagno por tres veces al santo Apóstol. Así, pues, oído esto, confiando en la promesa apostólica y, tras, habérsele reunido muchos ejércitos, entró en España para combatir a las gentes infieles.
