The following Orange County Transportation Authority bus system route descriptions are for services in operation as of September 9th, 2001, with a few adjustments to reflect changes to take place on December 9th, 2001. Also, will be looking ahead with a list of changes being proposed for March 2002. "These changes will improve transfer opportunities and reduce wait times." This list has been compiled and typed by Mark "MarkTime" Strickert, transit hound and regular octa rider. Where these differ from the official OCTA lists, well I seem to have a better handle on geography than they do?

Past route lists are also included below. Note that I also use these as checklists of routes and segments I have checked out. Stories on my tours are on their own pages. For similar (though mostly less detailed) notes on other transit systems in the US and Canada, check the separate listings. My main transit page, by the way, is called the Transit Terminal.

Significant proposed changes for March 2002

24 - Extending current routing east to Mall of Orange.
One proposal has this going via Orangethorpe, Miller, LaPalma, and Tustin. Am guessing this will help boost weak ridership east of Kraemer Ave. Will certainly mean a more direct connection between Fullerton and Mall of Orange, one of the many casualties of "straightlining".
29 - Increase in weekend frequency...to be :45 on the full route, and :15 south of Artesia Blvd., vs. current hourly and 20-minute service, respectively.
Official Transit Advocates of Orange County position is that they should also re-attach the pre-straightlining LaHabra Blvd./Central Ave. portion, returning the north terminal of the 29 to Brea Mall.
54 - Operate full weekday route on Saturday.
Will allow access to Satruday classes at Santiago Canyon College...and also allow a certain "completist" to ride the full route without wasting part of a day off.
55 - New route, combining most of route 155 and all of route 180.
Return of "one-seat" service from Newport Transportation Center to Santa Ana Transit Terminal, by matching up the two busiest so-called "community routes". The Sunflower Ave. portion of the 155 will be tacked on to the 127. Problems may develop, as the route is expected to take on the frequency of the 155 (20-minute service) instead of the more frequent, busier 180 (15- to 20-minute).
60 - Increase weekday evening span of service east of 17th/Tustin Ave.
Currently, last Larwin Square departure is 8:13pm, and last arrival 8:30. Service to Larwin Square is supposed to be extended to 10:00pm, which would add two or three more runs each way to the current schedule.
66 - Increase weekend evening span of service east of Walnut/Newport.
Currently, last Satruday eastbound run to Irvine Valley College leaves Newport Ave. about 5:35pm, and last westbound leaves Irvine Valley College at 4:53pm already. The draft write-up says the span will be stretched to 9:30pm, which would require also adding one or two runs to the schedule each way.
87 - Re-route to connect with Laguna Hills Transportation Center.
Am guessing it will take a side-trip northeast on Paseo de Valencia, about a two-mile addition.
131 - Cutting several early and late runs
An acceptable alternative to the original March plan, to cancel the 131 completely. If they still want to do that, I was pushing for routing the extension of the 24 via Orangethorpe, Lakeview, Riverdale and Tustin.
172 - New Route, using all of the former route 127, and the Sunflower segment of the current 155.
Will give an eastern anchor to what is now a very underused route. May make a bit more sense than just reattaching the 127 to its former mate, Route 37, but will have to watch the ridership figures.
