Lucky Day - Part I

by Julian

What a day. After several weeks of just trims, last week I had a lucky day. First, a guy with quite long hair wanted a real short flattop. Lots of hair falling, that was good.

Then, a young guy, not older than 14, enter the academy while I was waiting for a new customer. At the beginning I thought he was just accompanying his mother since he had a real short haircut. He had a #1 in the sides and back. On top, he had about 3 inches of hair combed to the side.

When he paid a haircut I jumped and asked him to get in and sit down. When I asked him what kind of haircut did he wanted, he said “cut it all on top”. He seemed really nervous, he didn’t want to speak too much but I couldn’t resist to know why did he wanted to be bald!!

While getting ready, I asked when was his last haircut and he said “last week”.

-So, why did you decided to cut it again?

-Teachers at my school are a pain in the ass

- Are you in a military school?

- No

- Well, this is a pretty short haircut, I don’t know why they ask you to cut it shorter

- Just do it OK?

When I turned the clippers on I could feel the tension on his body, every muscle was rigid

- All right kid, say good by to you hair ( I can’t resist telling this to most of my customers before I start cutting their hair)

With attachment #1 on the clippers, I started to pass them over the crown. I did it very slowly, and I made sure that the locks of hair the clippers cut fell over the cape, where he could see them.

Since his sides were already short and I was cutting on the backside of the top, he couldn’t see much of a change yet. But I could see how the long locks over his crown were disappearing, showing me the scalp and giving a roundness shape to his head. I kept passing the clippers over and over from side to side and advancing from the back to the front.

He kept looking at the mirror, trying to anticipate how would he look like. He wasn’t enjoying this and he seemed like he wanted to finish soon. Since I hadn’t been able to gather much information I tried again:

- Do you always cut your hair short?

- No

- So this is the first time you cut it this short?

- Yes

- Before the haircut you got last week, you had it long?

- Yes

- And what kind of haircut did you usually get?

- Just a normal style. Medium length

- So you have been brave this time eh?

- Yeah

So I figured out what had happened. My young fellow decided to try a new haircut. He had asked for a very short one and instead of giving him a close tapered haircut, they passed the # 1 guide all over the sides and back and left the top longer. The cut was quite radical and was not very well done, so his teacher asked him to fix it and then he decided to cut it all.

- Don’t you want me to leave some bangs in front?

- No, just take it all off

Well, here we go, The only hair left at that time were the bangs in the front. I lifted up with my hand and he urged me again “ cut it!!”. Very slowly I passed the clippers, his last bunch of hair was liberated and rested in my hand.

He said “thanks” and started to stand up. I stopped him. “Wait a minute, we are not done yet. Let me finish all right?”. I passed the clippers over and over in order to make sure I hadn’t left any longer hair. Then I fixed the sideburns and neck.

When I finished, I had a new boy in my chair. His face look now rounder and he looked fine I my opinion. But I really wanted to see the reaction of his older brother and his mother who were waiting outside for him. As soon as I took off the cape, he stood up very quickly, said thanks and went out really fast. I followed him and I could see the surprised face of his mother and the enjoyment on the face of his brother, but before they could say a word, he just said “Lets Go” and went out really fast. Poor kid, I’m sure he won’t try any more radical haircuts again!!

That was good but there were more action to come that day….
