New Young Man

by C

About 5 years ago I had a chance to pass the experience of my fond early memories that I shared with you last week. No the luck young lad was not my son but a friends son. His father was no where in the picture. The Kid was about 4.

He had thick dirty blond hair in the same style as that kid Nicholas from "Eight is Enough" only longer. His mom told me that every time she tried taking him to the barbershop the kid would put up such a big fuss the barber would not touch him. His told me about this and how she didn’t know what to do because he was starting to look like a girl and the school principal told her if he didn’t get a haircut he was going to get kicked out of school.

Like any concerned friend I volunteered to give him a haircut. (I figured he would be more willing to let somebody he knew cut his hair then a stranger). His mother was so greatful and asked me to give him a short haircut. She suggested to try it without warning if I wanted to be succesfull.

I decided to do it the next Saturday when his mom was going to leave him at my house for the weekend. I would give it a shot, he had no idea that I was planning to give him a haircut.

He came over Friday night. I gave him a bath and as I was combing his hair, the comb I was using kept getting stuck. I almost took my scissors that night and attack the rats’ nest on top of his head but I knew he was tired and I wouldn’t be able to get him to sit still long enough to give him a good quality haircut.

The next morning after feeding him breakfast I sat him down in the middle of the kitchen still in his PJs. and pulled out the tray that I set up the previous night with all my haircutting tools on it. (Hair cape, squirt bottle with water, scissors, comb, and clippers).

Before he knew it I had the cape around his neck. He still was clueless as what was going on. I then started combing his hair like I did the previous night after his bath and started wetting his hair with the squirt bottle. (At this time he was getting a little concerned but I was able to convince him that it was just a little game we were playing) I move back behind him, picked up my scissors and cut off his hair at the back about mid way up the neck.

When feeling some of his hair falling off, he turned around and saw 7 inches of his hair on the floor. He started howling, he now knew what was happening. Luckily he was sitting on his booster seat so he couldn’t stand up. It took me about 5 min. of bribing to calm him down just enough to continue.

I continued with the scissors around his whole head. Then I turned on the clippers (at this point he had stopped crying and let me cut his hair, I think the sound of the clippers relaxed him a little) I pushed his head down to his chest and clipped off another 2 inches at the back. (I used the #1 guard).

I continued with the #1 guard on the right side, then the left side (by this time he is actually smiling, I think he was starting to like this). Next I took off the attachment from the clippers and went back over the back and sides to taper the hair to 0 at the nape.

Now it was time to attack the top of the head again with scissors. (Mom requested I leave the top long enough to comb) I moved to the front and combed his bangs down. They covered his eyes completely.  I trimmed his bangs to the middle of his forehead. Then I cut his top to 3 inches. I think his haircut turned out pretty good in the end.

Later on, during the weekend when I took him to the park he commented to me about not having hair in his eyes anymore when he played on the monkey bars.

When his mom came to pick him up she almost didn’t recognize him and she was impressed I was able to do such a good job. (I think she thought I would fail miserly at giving her son a good haircut) for the next year I was his personal barber every 2 weeks.

THE END

Note: picture is not actual picture of the child discussed in this story but it gives a good idea!!
